Chinese in Argentina to discuss the construction of Atucha III

A delegation of technical and commercial experts from China visits Argentina this March to discuss the construction of Atucha III nuclear power plant, which indicates a potential to reach a commercial agreement.

Argentina hoped to announce in November an agreement with China to finance the nuclear plant, formerly known as Atucha III, during the state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, following the G20 summit held in Buenos Aires.

However, the parties could not reach an agreement and in January the Argentine Undersecretary of Nuclear Energy, Julián Gadano, and Argentina’s ambassador to China, Diego Guelar, met with Chinese officials in Beijing to discuss the project.

If built, the plant would be one of the largest projects funded in Argentina by China, which has become a key trading partner for the South American nation, as well as its largest non-institutional lender.
