Russian-Sudanese Nuclear Cooperation

The Sudanese Ministry of Electricity and the Russian Nuclear Power Agency signed a memorandum of understanding to provide Sudan with nuclear energy by the end of 2017.

 

The signing ceremony was held in Moscow by Alexey Likhachev, the Director General of Rosatom, and Yousif Hamza, the State Minister of the Ministry of Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity. This ceremony was held during the visit of Mr. Hamza to Moscow during Atomexpo.

 

The agreement includes several types of cooperation, such as nuclear, radiological and physical security, fundamental and applied researches, HR training, nuclear research centers based on multifunctional research reactors, etc. In addition, it contains bilateral cooperation in the development of nuclear infrastructure in Sudan, programs for raising public awareness of nuclear technologies and its application, radioisotopes and radiation technologies’ application in industrial, medical, agricultural sectors.

 

In 2012, Sudan informed the IAEA of its intention to build a nuclear power plant. This step was taken to meet the increasing demand for electricity by the increasing population.

 

Sudan launched a strategic plan 2017-2031 to diversify energy resources. Another step to achieve these plans is the cooperation between Sudan and China. Sudan signed an agreement with the CNNC to increase the 3000 MW annual power generating capacity to meet its goal of covering the demand of electricity of its population.
