The National Nuclear Safety Administration conducted a five-year safety review of the Taishan nuclear power project and dispatched on-site supervisors to conduct on-site supervision and inspection of the entire construction process.
Liu Hua, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Director of the National Nuclear Safety Administration issued this April a letter of approval for the initial loading of Unit 1 of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant to Taishan Nuclear Power Joint Venture Co., Ltd. in Beijing. This marks the beginning of the operation of the world’s first EPR unit.
Taishan nuclear power project in Guangdong is the largest cooperative project in the energy sector between China and France. It adopts the European advanced pressurized water reactor technology (EPR) and is operated by the China General Nuclear Power Group. The project started construction in 2009. It is the third EPR project in the world after Finland and France, but the first one to become operational.
