The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced the completion of more than 50 percent of units 3 and 4 at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant .
“All construction milestones for the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant project have been achieved in accordance with the highest standards of quality and safety. The latest successful achievement of these milestones for Units 3 and 4, is a result of many months of hard work by all those involved.” said Mohamed Al Hammadi, ENEC CEO.
“These milestones are a result of ENEC’s extensive collaboration with its prime contractor and joint venture partner, the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO),” added Al Hammadi.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is scheduled for completion in 2020, with construction having started in 2012. With four reactors online, the facility will deliver up to a quarter of the UAE’s electricity needs and save up to 12 million tons in carbon emissions every year.
In Egypt, minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mohamed Shaker discussed cooperation with South Korea in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and exchange information in the areas of construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants.
This came during a meeting with Minister of Electricity and the Ambassador of South Korea in Egypt Sun-Ju Yoon at the ministry’s headquarter to discuss the status and future of cooperation between the two countries in the field of electricity and renewable energy.
The meeting reviewed the joint projects, and a number of memorandums of understanding have been signed on the sidelines of the presidential visit to Korea in February 2016, including a memorandum of understanding with the Korean company “Dwosan” in the establishment of a power plant from coal operating pressures technology, including the Korean side to conduct the technical and financial feasibility studies for projects.
The meeting also dealt with a memorandum of understanding between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the Alliance of Swedish companies, Hyundai and Daewoo to develop the electricity transmission networks, in addition to a memorandum of understanding for the implementation of the plant project Votovlatih capacity of 20 megawatts at a cost of $ 42 million, including the Korean side to conduct the technical and financial feasibility of the project studies.
Dr. Shaker praised the Egyptian-Korean relations, referring to the energy transport networks projects and control centers which are necessary to those projects in the next phase, calling for the Korean side to subscribe to it.
The two sides also discussed the offer of Korea for cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including human resource development, and transfer of learned lessons in the areas of construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants, and organize training programs and the continuation of cooperation in all the various training programs.
