During The 3rd Jordan International Energy Summit in Amman , the chairman of Jordan Atomic energy Commission: Khaled Toukan declared that 2017 will be decisive in the decision to invest in the Jordanian nuclear plant in cooperation with “Rosatom”.
He added that the organization will study the introduction of small modular reactors (SMR) to desalinate water and generate electricity in the kingdom starting from next year in cooperation with King Abdullah City for Atomic & Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) from Saudi Arabia.
During 2017 design operations will be continued to extract the “yellow cake” to pre-industrial level and the research reactor will be operated by 70 Jordanian engineers, scientists and technicians.
Dr. Toukan added that nuclear energy will become a major component in the kingdom overall energy mix, and the Jordanian nuclear program focus in three key areas: Uranium mining, development of the human resources and electricity generation from the nuclear plant.
A group of ministers, including Dr. Ibrahim Saif, Jordan Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, H.E. Qasim Al-Fahadawi, Minister of Electricity of Irak, H.E. Eng Mohamed Shaker, Egypt Minister of Electricity & Renewable Energy, the Deputy Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, Osama Assran, and Arcandra Tahar, the Indonesian Energy Minister, who participated in the summit held a session focused on the main challenges in the energy sector.
