The Travelling Wave Reactor Project

 

At the end of June, Mr. Wang Shoujun, President of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) met with the chief executive officer of TerraPower Mr. Lee Mclntire and his colleagues. The meeting was held at the headquarters in Beijing.

 

Both sides discussed the status of the jointly-developed travelling wave reactor (TWR) project.

 

The International Cooperation Development, the Legal Affairs Department of CNNC as well as the leaders from the preparatory team of the TWR joint venture attended the meeting.

 

 

 

*Traveling Wave Reactor (TWR) uses depleted uranium, with an estimated period of operation without refueling spanning 40 to 60 years. The byproduct of the Uranium-235 fission can be re-used for other TWR reactors.

 

 

 

In September 2015 TerraPower signed an agreement with the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) to build a prototype 600 MWe reactor unit at Xiapu in Fujian province, China during 2018 to 2025, generating about 1150 MWe, are planned for the late 2020s.
