Delay for Barakah

The Emirates Corporation for Nuclear Energy (ENEC) announced that the first nuclear reactor project in the UAE will be delayed until 2018 due to problems with the necessary certification of the operating company.

In 2009, Abu Dhabi signed a contract with the Korean Electrical Power Company (KEPCO) to build four reactors for a value of 20.4 Billion USD. Each reactor is planned to generate 1400 MW of electrical power.

The corporation stated that the decision to delay the operation date of the reactor was related to the high standards of nuclear safety required by the authority. This decision will increase the operating capability of the reactor as well as the capability of its workers.

The construction work on the first reactor started in 2012, it reached 95%. The total work percentage on the four reactors reached 79%.
