Akkuyu Nuklear JSC, which is implementing the project for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, received a limited construction permit from the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK), which is the first stage on the way to obtaining a license to build a nuclear power plant.
A limited building permit allows to start construction and installation works at all facilities of the nuclear power plant, with the exception of buildings and facilities important for the security of the “nuclear island”.
“Obtaining a limited building permit is an important stage for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant project. We are moving from the preparatory period directly to the construction works on the site, most of which will be contracted by local construction contractors – declared Yuri Galanchuk, the general director of JSC Akkuyu Nuklear. – Our next task is to get a license for construction. We want to begin work on the construction of the entire complex of buildings and facilities of the nuclear power plant in the shortest possible time. At the same time, for us, the most important task is to comply with all national and international safety standards. ”
To obtain a limited building permit Akkuyu Nuclear employees in close cooperation with representatives of the enterprises of Rosatom State Corporation who are participants of the project fulfilled the development of project documentation for the construction of the Akkuyu NPP power unit No. 1, which resulted in the TAEK as part of the application for license for construction On March 3, 2017, a preliminary safety assessment report (POBR), probabilistic safety analysis (PSA) of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, as well as a number of other documents, guides NPP safety. A limited building permit was issued following a thorough review and evaluation by TAEK of the submitted documents.
In the coming months, the staff of the Department of Nuclear Safety of TAEK will continue their analysis, get acquainted with the progress of work on the site, and then draw up a report on the evaluation of the application for a construction license. With a positive assessment, the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency will issue Akkuyu Nuclear JSC with a construction license that will allow the construction of all buildings and structures of the nuclear power plant, as well as the installation of all necessary systems without restriction, with strict observance of all safety standards.
Obtaining a construction license is expected in the first half of 2018
