UAE is preparing to start operating its first nuclear power plant

UAE’s Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh “Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum”, said on Sunday (January 8, 2018) that his country is preparing to operate the first nuclear power plant in 2018.

“The plant is amongst world’s largest single global project worth 20 billion dollars and will include four nuclear reactors”. He said in a series of tweets through his official account on “Twitter”, were first spotted by “Anadolu” news agency.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid added that the appointment of the Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation was approved at a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE’s Baraka Nuclear Power Project is the world’s largest nuclear power plant and is ahead of nuclear sites in China, the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia as four identical reactors are being built at the same time.

Construction commenced at the plant in July 2012, which is located in the western region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, overlooks the Arabian Gulf, and is about 53 km southwest of Ruwais. The Baraka nuclear power plant is expected to produce electricity of up to 5,600 megawatts.

“Nawaat Energy”, a joint venture between Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Korea Electric Power Company (KEC), will manage and operate the plant.
