Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched the fourth stage of the “Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Power Complex”, with a capacity of 700 MW.
Sheikh “Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum”, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, laid the cornerstone for the fourth stage of the project on the evening of March 19th.
The “Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex”, is the world’s largest renewable energy project under IPP, with 1,000 megawatts by 2020 and 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
This stage is the world’s largest Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project, built in a single location, under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) system with a capacity of 700 megawatts of clean electricity, and will be operational from the last quarter of 2020.
The world’s tallest solar tower, with a height of 260 meters and with the world’s largest thermal storage capacity of 15 hours, will be built allowing for continuous 24-hour power production. The project will contribute to reducing more than 1.4 million tons of carbon emissions per year.
The project will use two technologies for the production of clean energy. The first is the equivalent parabolic reflectors technology with a capacity of 600 MW and the concentrated solar power tower technology for a capacity of 100 MW. While the total area will reach 43 square kilometers. The total investments for this project reached 14.2 billion dirhams, or about $ 4 billion.
The project is being developed by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in partnership with “Acwa Power” and implemented by “Shanghai Electric” as the project’s main contractor.
