The Zimbabwe Hwange coal-fired power station expansion project, which was built by China Hydropower Construction Group International Engineering Co., Ltd., officially started the construction. This is the largest power construction project since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that the expansion of the Hwange Power Station will promote the modernization of Zimbabwe’s energy infrastructure and provide protection for self-sufficiency in electricity. More investors are welcome to invest in the energy industry in Zimbabwe.
According to the project, Zimbabwe’s actual power generation per day is about 1.2 GW, and there is a power gap of about 400 MW per day. It needs to import a large amount of electricity from neighboring countries. The expansion project will significantly increase the power generation in Zimbabwe and improve the current shortage of electricity. The project plans to build two coal-fired units with a capacity of 335 MW on the basis of the original power station. The project construction period is about 42 months, with a total investment of nearly 1.5 billion US dollars. The Export-Import Bank of China provides Zimbabwe with nearly 1 billion US dollars in concessional loans.
