The president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently underlined the importance of building a nuclear power plant in the province of Mersin. In 2010, Turkey signed the first Mersin-Akkuyu nuclear power plant agreement with Russia, according to which, by 2023, the Russians should complete the plant with Four nuclear reactors and a production capacity of 4,800 megawatts of electricity. But Akkuyu will supply only 10% of Turkey’s energy needs.
“Despite the Sinop nuclear power plant, we still need to build a third nuclear power plant, which is sure to be built soon.” Many foreign powers oppose the construction of a nuclear power plant in Turkey, saying that the construction of these plants is not cost-effective in addition to environmental threats, but they themselves have the largest nuclear power plants in the world and they are using.”
The third plant will be built by State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation of China.
