Within the next seven years, the government’s goal to triple the nuclear energy goal is not seen to be fulfilled. The central government is indirectly acknowledging that the current capacity of generating power from nuclear power to 6.700 GW to 21-22 GW will be completed only by the year 2030-31. By the end of last year, it was a matter of achieving this target by 2024-25.
Minister of State Jitendra Singh said that nuclear power capacity will be added to 15.7 GW by the year 2031. This production capacity will be added through 21 new nuclear power plants. In May 2017, It was also stated that the capacity to generate this will be 35 GW by 2030 and 60 GW by the year 2050.
7 GW of electricity will be set up with the help of domestic nuclear reactors. For this, it was a matter of setting up ten units of pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWR) based on the domestic technology for 700 MW capacity. So far no place has been identified and no decision has been made on which companies will apply them. Out of these, the proposed projects in Rajasthan, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh were to start work in this year (2018).
