The National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan) continues to carry out research on the Experimental Power Reactor (RDE) which can produce electricity with a capacity of 10 MWt or equivalent to 3 MWe and can be used for lighting 2,000 homes. This High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (HTGR) has entered the detailed design engineering stage.
Head of Batan Djarot Sulistio Wisnubroto added that RDE will be the 4th reactor owned by Batan after the reactors in Bandung, Yogyakarta and Serpong. The three research reactors conduct radioisotope research and production, while RDE will be used for heat and electricity.
In terms of human resources, Batan has a Nuclear Technology College (STTN) located in Yogyakarta each year graduating around 100 people.
In addition to STTN, several universities such as UGM and ITB have also begun to have majors related to nuclear technology. These young workers will be working on the successor of the research reactor. Indonesian human resources are ready and abundant.
