The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced the completion of the safe operation of the main and backup power transformers and the Gas Insulated Bus (GIB) at the third unit of the Barakah Nuclear Power Project. This step is a prelude to the thermal performance test of the plant.
ENEC also confirmed the successful operation of the alarm transformer at the third station under normal operating conditions, with the approval and support of Abu Dhabi Transport and Control Company (TRANSCO).
Thermal performance testing lasts several weeks and involves more than 200 independent and comprehensive tests to verify the performance of major systems in full operation, but without the use of nuclear fuel.
The total completion rates in the four units reached 93%, while the completion rate of the second unit reached more than 95%, the third reached more than 91%, and the fourth reached more than 82%. After the completion of all construction works at the first unit, it is currently undergoing comprehensive tests in preparation for obtaining the operating license from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
The four units, once operational, will provide reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly energy to the UAE’s electricity grid and will contribute to reducing the emission of more than 21 million tons of carbon emissions per year.
