Brazil promotes workshop on modular reactors

The Department of Energy Information and Studies (DIE) of the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), organized the workshop Technology of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMR) on August 26th.

Reive Barros, Secretary of the MME Energy Planning and Development Secretary and Ivan Dybov, President of Rosatom Latin America, attended the workshop. Rosatom is co-sponsor of the workshop.

In the workshop outreach material, the MME states that many countries are changing their energy paradigms by seeking efficient, reliable, low-emission sources located close to consumers. Thus, small modular reactors are an option to meet new industry requirements.

According to the ministry, in addition to preserving all the advantages of nuclear power generation, these reactors have several advantages, such as lower capital investment and construction time, compact arrangement, modularity and possibility of operation in different types of networks.

This workshop is the first of six MME events held through November that address topics related to power generation. The goal is to spread knowledge about the characteristics of various generating sources, to help identify their potential benefits for Brazil, and to raise issues relevant to long-term energy sector planning.
