Georgian Gardabani–2 power plant to rely on Azerbaijani natural gas

The Gardabani-2 thermal power plant can produce 230 MWh of electricity. It also plays an important role in supplying Georgia with electricity. Georgian energy engineers believe that the Gardabani-2 thermal power plant needs Azerbaijan’s natural gas to operate at full capacity.

$ 180 million has been invested in the construction of the Gardabani-2 thermal power plant. This plant uses less natural gas than other power units.

It is worth noting that Georgia is looking for natural gas and oil on the cliff of the Black Sea; however, the possibility of oil is still only speculations, and the Gardabani-2 plant will operate with natural gas imported from Azerbaijan.

Reports indicate that if the natural gas problem is solved, the Gardabani-2 plant will be able to generate 1.3 – 1.5 billion KWh of electricity annually.

The amount of “blue fuel” Georgia will get this year will increase by 20-30% as a result of transporting gas to Turkey via the Tanab Line. This will also increase the production capacity of Gardabani -1 and Gardabani -2 thermal power plants.
