On 22nd February, France started operations to shut down its oldest nuclear power plant in the Fessenheim region, after 43 years of operation.
In a statement, the French energy company, Electricité de France (EDF), said it had suspended a reactor out of two at the plant, while the second reactor would be shut down in June.
It added that the reactors may take several months before they cool enough and the fuel used can begin to be removed, noting that the removal of fuel is expected to be completed in 2023.
It also indicated that the station will be fully decommissioned by at least 2040.
