The Minister of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE, “Thani Bin Ahmed Al-Zyoudi”, affirmed that his country strongly supports the efforts to transition to renewable energy in the African continent; through pumping investments in more than 25 projects in 14 African countries.
He explained during a high-level virtual meeting, organized in partnership between the African Union Commission and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), that some of these projects are already in place and some are under implementation, and their production capacity exceeds 1 GW.
The meeting discussed the effects of the novel Coronavirus on the energy sector in African countries, and the alignment of the pandemic response with the climate & sustainable development goals in line with the African Agenda 2063.
He pointed out that the negative effects of the novel Coronavirus pandemic affected life aspects and industrial sectors, foremost among which is the general health of people and the economic systems of the countries, stressing that one of the most important aspects of the optimal response to deal with these effects, is promoting the use and implementation of renewable energy solutions.
