Check assembly of Akkuyu’s first unit reactor

The mechanical engineering division of the Russian nuclear company “Rosatom” announced that the manufacturing of the first reactor for the first unit of the Turkish nuclear plant, Akkuyu, will soon be completed.

The Russian company stated that it had begun installing the nuclear reactor vessel, cover, and internal components, with the aim of testing, at the company’s branch in Volgodonsk, southern Russia.

Check assembly is a key operation during which assemblability of all manufactured internals and the reactor cover with the reactor vessel is checked. This operation is carried out in a special underground bench-caisson.

The statement also indicated that the installation work of all parts of the reactor, for the purpose of testing, contributes to a great way in the installation and construction of the reactor in the power unit.

The reactor is a vertical cylindrical vessel with an elliptical bottom, inside which are the active area and internal parts. The top of the reactor is sealed tightly by a cover equipped with motorized motors and controls and protection for the reactors installed on it, as well as nozzles for the outlet of the sensor cables to monitor the core of the reactor.

Last July, the Russian company announced that it had conducted successful hydraulic tests of the reactor pressure vessels for the first unit of the nuclear plant. Whule earlier, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Donmez, announced that his country aims to operate the first unit of the Akkuyu station in 2023 in conjunction with the centenary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.

The cost of the mega project is around US $20 billion. It would contribute to enhancing energy security in Turkey and creating new job opportunities.
