The Department of Science and Technology (DST) recently announced that a new nuclear plant would be built at Gorakhpur in Haryana. This will be the first nuclear plant in North India. This plant will be built on 560 hectares of land. This will generate 2800 MW of electricity. The foundation stone was laid in 2014. However, construction is just starting. The first phase will be completed by 2025 and the second phase by 2028. Once the second phase is completed, the 2800 MW plant will be fully operational.
The DST said that the Department of Atomic Energy has also been permitted to form joint ventures with Public Sector Undertakings to set up nuclear power plants. Which is an upcoming and promising sector and has the potential to meet India’s energy needs in times to come. According to a statement by the Department of Atomic Energy, most of India’s nuclear power plants were confined to southern Indian states such as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh or Maharashtra in the west. Now North India will also get the gift of a nuclear power plant.
The project will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 20,594 crore. This cost assessment was done in 2014. With rising inflation, the cost would have gone up now. National Power Corporation of India Limited This public sector unit is responsible for all the nuclear power plants in the country.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Atomic Energy, the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Project will have two units of 700 MW each. So far Rs 4,906 crore has been spent out of a total amount of Rs 20,594 crore. The overall financial progress so far is 23.8 per cent, the statement said. Construction of other main plant buildings or structures, such as fire water pump house , safety-related pump house , fuel oil storage area, ventilation stack, overhead tank , switchyard control building, the department said in the statement. And the construction of others is well underway.
