A Nuclear Renaissance in 2018?

The restart of China’s nuclear power may be delayed but not nonexistent. Nuclear power characterizes a “national business card,” and it relates to the technological output of the “Belt and Road Initiative.” It is supported by the national decision-making level this year.

On April 10th, the fuel loading was approved for Taishan Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, and two weeks later, on April 23rd, the Director of the Nuclear Department from the National Energy Administration, Zeng Yachuan, declared that Gen-III nuclear power plants meet the conditions for mass construction. He added that China must scientifically and rationally develop a new round of nuclear power development strategy for 2035;

On April 25th, the Sanmen Nuclear Power Unit 1 was approved for the first fuel-loading and the first batch of fuel assembly loading operations for Unit 1 was started that night.

Fourteen units have completed their preliminary preparations and are waiting to start construction. Among these 14 units:

  • Four sets will feature Hualong No. 1 technology, including Units 1 and 2 of HuiZhou and Units 1 and 2 of ZhangZhou Nuclear Power;
  • Eight units are AP1000 models, including Lufeng Nuclear Units 1, 2 Units, Xu Dapu Nuclear Units 1, 2 Units, Sanmen Nuclear Units 3, 4 and Haiyang Nuclear Units 3, 4;
  • Two are CAP1400 models at Shidaowan.
