Atomic Energy Regulatory Board new regulatory safety documents

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has put up its regulatory safety documents (REGDOC) on website. AERB develops and lays down safety requirements and guidance for utilities and users in the form of REGDOC. The regulatory safety documents are developed with a view to cover regulated nuclear and radiation facilities and with graded approach.

The regulatory safety documents are categorised as follows:

  • Safety Codes and Standards: Safety codes establish the objectives and set requirements that shall be fulfilled to provide adequate assurance for safety.
  • Safety Guidelines: A document providing safety requirements and guidance for particular practices or applications where a corresponding safety code has not been issued.
  • Safety Guides: Safety guides elaborate various requirements specified in Safety Codes and furnish recommended approaches for their implementation.
  • Safety Manuals: A document detailing the various safety aspects/instructions and requirements relating to a particular practice or application that are to be followed by a utility.

New regulatory safety documents are developed or existing documents are revised on the basis of technological advances, changes in international state of art, research and development work, relevant operational lessons learned and institutional knowledge.

AERB has an established process for development, review, revision and publication of regulatory safety documents. Stakeholders and experts (in-house as well outside) are involved in the process. Regulatory safety documents form the basis for regulation of facilities & activities in ensuring that the use of ionising radiation and nuclear energy in India does not cause undue risk to health of the people and the environment.

In keeping with AERB’s commitment to stakeholders’ engagement, comments and suggestions on any regulatory safety document are invited by AERB. One can post comments and suggestions to [email protected] at any time. AERB uses these comments in revisions of its regulatory safety documents.
