Botswana opportunities in Coal Mining

During a visit to Minergy Limited Mine in Medie (Kweneng District) Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology, and Energy Security, Mr. Lefoko Moagi, stated that there is a need to exploit coal more efficiently and profitably.

He stressed the government’s intention to exploit the coal resource that sat at around 200 billion tons in Botswana.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. Thulagano Segokgo said that Minergy has the opportunity to partner with the government to develop infrastructure such as the Mmamabule-Lephalale rail link to ease transport logistics for the market.

He also said the government would look into roads that linked the mine and peripheral villages to see how best the issue of dust could be resolved.

Minergy Limited CEO, Morne du Plessis, said the company was reeling from the 15 weeks of border closure due to COVID-19 impacts that harmed their operations. Mr. du Plessis said prices had dropped and further pleaded with the government to improve border clearing of trucks since a trip from South Africa to Francistown could take up to five days.
