As said in the medium-long term development program, by 2020 China’s installed nuclear capability in operation would reach 5800MW. It is estimated to generate around 14 thousand tons of the spent fuel by 2025. Matching with the rapid development of the nuclear power projects in China, the spent fuel reprocessing and management shall also become a big topic in China.
Recently, Mr. Liu Yongde, the secretary of the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) stated that China will endeavor to promote the R&D and ability construction in the spent fuel treatment, storage and transport, thus to ensure the safety and security of the spent fuel. In the following years, the management of the spent fuel will be the keynote in the CAEA agenda.
- China will continuously improve the policy supporting system and establish the funds used for the spent fuel treatment and management.
- China will steadily promote the ability construction of the spent fuel storage and transport.
- China plans to increase the size of the spent fuel reprocessing projects and establish the closed-loop system in the fuel management.
Meanwhile, China will continue to enhance the cooperation with the international markets to upgrade its capabilities.
