China is building its own floating nuclear power plant, and South China Sea will host 20 offshore units. The development of offshore nuclear power plants has only one purpose, to protect the territorial interest of the country. As theSouth China Sea covers an area of 3,5 million square kilometers, territorial protection and fresh water are at the center of litigation between Brunei, the China (PRC), Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The construction and operation of such plants is a strategy for China to increase and protect its maritime zone.
However, due to environmental protection and other issues, China must carefully consider this matter, because in the event of a nuclear accident, China will lose any legal action, and claim of territory.
The launch of Russia’s first floating nuclear power plant “Akademik Lomonosov,” is observed as a reference for the implementation of similar nuclear power projects by China.
