On September 10, China Atomic Energy Agency (CAEA) signed a cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to establish China’s first IAEA nuclear security cooperation center, which is a new milestone in China’s nuclear security cooperation with other countries around the world. It is of great significance for promoting nuclear safety and sustainable development of nuclear energy.
The Acting Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Cornel, Director of China Atomic Energy Agency, Zhang Kejian, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, and ambassador of the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Wang Qun, witnessed the signing of the agreement.
In recent years, CAEA has been vigorously developing nuclear security detection technology and continuously improved its technological innovation capabilities to prevent nuclear radiation, explosions and other terrorist attacks. The nuclear security equipment independently developed by CAEA has served in many important public fields such as China’s large-scale activities, civil aviation, Customs, public security, nuclear weapons units, railways, urban rail transit, etc. Furthermore, the related equipment has been exported to Tanzania, Uganda.
After the establishment and operation of the Safety& Security Center, CAEA will use the cooperation center as a platform to conduct research, development, testing and evaluation of nuclear security detection technology, as well as experience sharing, support cooperation, and exchange training.
