CNPE launches the first national nuclear R&D project

Recently, the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of P.R.C, which was led by China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd., (CNPE) was officially approved for the “Research on the Behavior and Phenomena of Core Melt under Serious Accidents”. This project is a specific one in the first batch of nuclear-related projects in the national key R&D plan, and also the first CNPE-led national-level key R&D project since the establishment of CNPE.

The project team consists of core research forces in the field of serious accidents in China. including China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd., Nuclear Power Institute of China, CGN- Nuclear Research Institute Co., Ltd., SPIC-Science and Technology Research Institute, Hualong International Nuclear Power Technology Co., Ltd., Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Harbin Engineering University and other three nuclear power research institutes.

Starting from the background of international research, this project will focus on engineering applications and focus on the legacy issues and international hotspots of serious accident safety research, and provide knowledge preparation for the development of autonomous safety analysis software and high-power reactors.

NβN tip:  The study of serious nuclear accident safety in China started late. Basic research on serious accident mechanism and phenomenology is still scarce, especially in the research of core melt behavior and real melt materials. China is basically in a semi-blank or blank state in the above-mentioned area.
