The Director of Nuclear Sciences Institute in Ankara University, Prof. Dr. Niyazi Meriç said that the number of expert academicians related to nuclear energy was low in Turkey. In short term, the country will require a total of 16000 nuclear experts for 4 units of Akkuyu NES.
Meriç emphasized the importance of cooperation with foreign countries for training nuclear energy experts.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed ways to develop strategic partnership, including the cooperation in the nuclear field in November 2015.
Ankara Institute of Nuclear Science organized recently a workshop with Ukraine and a training program to be developped by both entities.
Nuclear students after receiving the theoretical education in Turkey, will have experimental and laboratory lessons on practical nuclear reactor sites in Ukraine and even internships in nuclear. Meriç added that they are communicating with many institutions, especially the Kiev Polytechnic and Odessa State Polytechnic Universities.
Note: Ukraine consumes 163 billion kilowatts/hour of electricity per year and produces half of its consumption through the 15 active nuclear reactors.
Note: Meanwhile, 307 Turkish students are currently studying nuclear engineering in Russia, under the agreement with Rosatom, which will build Akkuyu NPP.
