Core catcher for Dabaa

Russia’s “Rosatom” to supply Egypt with one of the latest nuclear reactor protection systems in order to protect the Dabaa nuclear power plant from any potential hazards, that same plant which is expected to be built by 2020.

The core catcher is working to protect the nuclear reactors that will be built in Dabaa from the melting of nuclear fuel in the reactor in the case of a major disaster may lead to the leakage of the nuclear fuel.

On November 19, 2015, Egypt and Russia signed an agreement to build and operate the first Russian nuclear power plant, through “Rosatom”, in the Dabaa region on the Mediterranean coast, west of Egypt.

The plant will consist of four (VVER 1200) nuclear reactors with a capacity of 1200 MW per unit and a total capacity of 4800 MW.

These units are classified as the third generation of Russian nuclear power stations “+3”, which are built and operated in accordance with the Russian nuclear reactor standards of 2006, in order to increase the level of safety and security and to improve technical and economic performance.
