Coronavirus haunts El Dabaa nuclear project

It is expected that the issuance of a permit to start the implementation of the Dabaa nuclear plant project, by the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority, will be postponed; this means further delays in the implementation of the Dabaa nuclear project.

Dr. Amjad Al-Wakeel, head of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, said that the authority has already submitted all the papers and documents to the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority to obtain the construction permit for the NPP.

He expected that the permit would be issued during the second half of 2022 instead of the middle of this year, pointing to the submission of the first safety analysis report, which is the largest document of licensing documents at 36,110 pages, for the first two nuclear units in the 4-unit project.

He added that the Coronavirus is the main reason for postponing the issuance of the construction permit more than once, explaining that communication is constant with the Rosatom, which implements the El Dabaa project.

He pointed out that the work at the El Dabaa NPP is taking place in parallel with the completion of the licenses, explaining that the Russian company is working at full capacity to prevent any delay in the schedule despite the current conditions of the pandemic.

The El Dabaa nuclear plant obtained the site approval permit from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority on March 10, 2019. This is an acknowledgment that the site and its characteristics comply with Egyptian requirements and the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is reflected in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of nuclear facilities.
