Development of New Energy Storage in China

April 2021 – the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued the “Guidelines on Accelerating the Development of New Energy Storage (Draft for Comment)”.

The “Guiding Opinions on New Type of Energy Storage” clarified and quantified the development goals of the energy storage industry for the first time at the national level. This will release positive policy signals for society and capital, guide social capital to flow into technology and industry and boost the rapid arrival of the trillion-dollar energy storage market.

In the “Guiding Opinions on New Energy Storage”, energy storage on the power supply side emphasizes the layout of system-friendly new energy power station projects, the planning, and construction of large-scale clean energy bases for cross-regional transmission, and the exploration and utilization of existing plant sites and transmission and transformation facilities for decommissioned thermal power units build energy storage or wind and solar storage facilities.

Grid-side energy storage emphasizes the need for new energy storage to adjust the power grid flexibly and power grid emergency power supply, and to delay the upgrade and transformation of power transmission and transformation. User-side energy storage has always been the most viable application field of the energy storage industry.
