Egypt supports the development of renewable energy in Africa

Dr. Mohamed El Khayat, Chairman of the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority, announced that the Ministry of Electricity is cooperating with African countries in the field of renewable energy (solar and water). Egypt has provided grants to Uganda and Eritrea to implement two solar power plants with a capacity of 4 MW each.

He added that Egypt offers many training programs for trainees from African countries, especially the Nile basin countries, adding that Egypt is always ready to continue cooperation and exchange experiences in the fields of electricity and renewable energy with the African brothers.

Al-Khayat explained that the Authority is currently implementing renewable energy projects in about 15 African countries, through Egyptian grants and joint cooperation, in addition to encouraging renewable energy projects, energy efficiency and others.

Al-Khayat mentioned that field visits to electricity projects sites were organized for trainees from Africa. As the training programs include field visits to renewable energy projects at the various sites of the Authority in Zafarana, Jabal Al-Zayt and Kurimat.

This comes in the midst of ambitious African initiatives, including the African Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI), which aims to generate 10 GW from renewable energy projects by 2020 and increase this capacity to 300 GW by 2030.
