Sudan is expected to start the pilot operation of its first nuclear power plant on May 31st, 2020.
Sudan signed a protocol with China to build the first nuclear power plant for peaceful purposes on May 24th, 2016, for the generation of electricity, in addition to medical and scientific research applications. A second protocol was also signed with Russia.
The plant will also be utilized to: provide isotopic analysis services by neutron activation for mining and environmental studies companies; radioisotope production for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, etc.; as well as various services and products with an economic return that is expected to contribute more than 13% of the National GDP.
In August 2018, a delegation of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived in the Sudanese capital Khartoum to conduct an integrated review of Sudan’s nuclear program in its first phase.
The Sudanese National Commission for the Implementation of the Nuclear Program includes: the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity; the Atomic Energy Commission; the National Authority for the Control of Nuclear and Radiological Activities; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Ministry of Justice; the National Council for Civil Defense; and the Intelligence Service.
