Indian dreams of the Algerian Mirage

Mohammed Hamid Ansari, Vice-President of India, was recently in Algeria to refresh the commercial and technical relations between both countries. During his visit, he met with President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika*.

  1. Despite the good relations between both countries, the bilateral agreements are still limited:
  2. Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (not ratified and not operational)
  3. Phytosanitary Agreement
  4. Veterinary Sanitation Protocol Air Service Agreement
  5. Agreement between Press Trust of India and Algeria Press Service
  6. Agreement on Cooperation in Small and Medium-scale Enterprises Cultural Exchange Program
  7. MOU of Foreign Office Consultations
  8. MOU between Air and Algeria National Radio, and MOU between Doordarshan and Algerian National Television.

The Vice-President declared that both countries agree to revive those relations** as bilateral trade decreased significantly form USD 3.3 Billion in 2015 to USD 1.556 Billion in 2016 due to the fall of Algerian hydrocarbon export to India.

India and Algeria declared their intent to work together in various fields in particular the nuclear energy for peaceful use, the aerospace sector, and the pharmaceutical industry and ICTs.

The Indian Vice-president invited the Algerian Prime Minister Abdel Alek Sellal to an official visit to India.

*Bouteflika was invited for the first time in 2001 as the chief guest during the Republic day celebration.

**Diplomatic relation between India and Algeria was established in 1962.
