On 14-15 January 2017, the seventh session of the Assembly of IRENA took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Assembly gathered government officials from over 150 countries, representatives from the private sector, civil society and international organisations. Italy was elected as President of the seventh session of the IRENA Assembly, and the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Jordan, and Morocco as Vice-Presidents.
The IRENA Assembly featured a number of strategic and programmatic discussions around central themes of the Agency’s work and mandate. The discussions promoted an exchange of information and best practices among Members and experts in support of efforts to increase the uptake of renewable energy.
1100 governmental and private delegates from 158 States, 140 International organizations and more that 70 ministers, 40 MPs and 50 international speakers participated in said meetings with a comprehensive agreement emphasizing the call to simulate investment in the renewable energy globally.
The General assembly stressed, two days round, the necessity of increasing investment in the renewable energy sector and doubling projects throughout the world so as leading to accelerate the deployment of renewal energy solutions especially with the decline of the costs of supplies and tools of renewable energy significantly mainly the solar energy, and that the sources of renewable energy are now gaining growing acceptance in various fields necessitating accelerating the pace of transformation in the energy sector and expanding its scope in the reduction of carbon emissions and contributing to the upgrading of the quality of life, providing work opportunities, achieving development goals and ensuring a cleaner and more prosperous future, knowing that working on the development of the new system of the energy sector requires accelerating the pace of current efforts in a number of countries to avoid carbon emissions.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation that founded in January 26, 2009 in Bonn city of Germany aims at encouraging the use of renewable energy sources around the world. The Agency’s headquarters is located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international co-operation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. IRENA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy, in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.
