Dr. Amjad El-Wakeel, Head of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), announced the start of construction of a marine dock to receive equipment required for the construction of the nuclear power plant in El Dabaa, before the end of this year, in addition to starting to establish a global data center in El Dabaa region.
El-Wakeel indicated that it is expected to issue a construction permit for the El Dabaa NPP site in June 2021. He also indicated that project commandments are being followed in order to successfully acquire the construction permit. The permit will allow the commencement of laying concrete bases for the first of the four VVER-1200 nuclear reactors with a capacity of 1200 MW.
According to El-Wakeel, the contractors working at the El Dabaa site has nothing to do with the start of construction of the reactors, as this is concerned with leveling works, administrative buildings, and ancillary buildings only.
He also clarified that the application for obtaining construction permit was submitted in January 2019, confirming that the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority is the authority responsible for issuing the permit.
