Kazakhstan will organize public hearings on the construction of nuclear power plants

The government will hold public hearings on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Almaty region in late February. The residents can express their opinion about the project and exchange with the experts.

The Kazakh nuclear power plant will be built in the Almaty region. The Ulken settlement was specified as a more exact location. Deputy Energy Minister, Askhat Hasenov said that when choosing a site for the plant, the seismic activity of the region will be taken into account.

Last February, the head of the state stressed that Kazakhstan will foresee the decline of the domestic economy without nuclear power. In June 2022, the Ministry of Energy drew up a short list of four suppliers for the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan after considering their technologies.

The Ministry of Energy named Rosatom as the technology favorite for the future nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. However, Energy Minister Alikhan Smailov said that no decision on Rosatom has been made yet.
