Indian officials indicated that uncertainties may arise in the early days of a new reactor.
The chief of the Indian Atomic Energy Corporation Limited (NPCIL) SK Sharma declared that Unit 2 of the Kudankulam nuclear plant should be operated in the next two weeks. The unit has been going under repair since August 2017. Urging not to disclose his name, a senior NPCIL official revealed that Unit 1, which started its business operations in March this year, was closed in August to repair the several equipment in the conventional island.
Both Unit 1 and 2 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project are 1000 MW and currently the largest producer of nuclear power in the country.
NPCIL is currently working on the construction of Unit-3 and Unit-4.
The normal infrastructure agreement was signed for the unit-5 and unit-6 in June 2017. With the aim of strengthening nuclear power generation in the country and boosting the industry, the government approved 10 new nuclear reactors that same year.
