Kuwait is planning to launch a tender for the generation of 2 GW of alternative energy from Al Shaqaya Complex within the new phase of the ambitious renewable energy development project in the current fiscal year, which runs until March 2020.
The third phase of the 2 GW generation project will include projects for concentrated solar thermal and wind power projects, although details of the percent of each source has yet to be disclosed. While the projects will be developed according to the system of independent energy production projects supervised by the Public Private Partnership Projects Authority.
Al Shaqaya Renewable Energy Complex is being developed by the Kuwait Renewable Energy Institute in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity and Water. The first pilot phase was completed in 2018, which included the generation of 50 MW of concentrated solar energy, 10 MW of solar PV and 10 of wind power.
The second phase, supervised by KNPC, will be a project to produce 1.5 GW of photovoltaic power. The bids were received from seven consortiums in April for this project and will be developed according to the system of EPC + F.
