South Africa has announced the preparation of a plan to produce an additional 2,500 MW of electricity using nuclear energy over the next five years.
The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy revealed, during the presentation of its strategic plan before the Energy Committee in the House of Representatives, that the road map for this project will be ready soon. It also indicated that the market will be studied to find out the cost and financing options available.
South Africa is currently utilizing a single nuclear power plant. Support for other NPPs has declined after the ruling National Congress Party had forced former President Jacob Zuma to resign in 2018.
The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Guidi Mantashi, said that the project to build a nuclear power plant will go ahead, and all available options will be studied, adding that the project has been granted to a company with a building and operating system and then transferring ownership to the state, which means that there will be no urgent need for financing from Country.
