Nuclear cooperation agreement between Russia and Ethiopia

On Wednesday 23rd October, the governments of Russia and Ethiopia signed an agreement on the cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit in Sochi.

The document provides a legal basis for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including Russia’s assistance in the construction and development of Ethiopia’s nuclear infrastructure, the development of nuclear and radiological security systems, and the protection of nuclear materials, radioactive sources and nuclear storage sites.

The Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom noted that the agreement paves the way for discussions between the two sides on the nuclear industry, as well as the implementation of specific projects.

Ethiopian Minister of Technology, Jitahun Mikoria Kuma, told TASS, Russian News Agency, on the sidelines of the summit, that his country is planning to build a nuclear power plant.
