The Head of National Nuclear Energy Agency, Djarot Sulistio Wisnubroto declared recently that nuclear is a serious option to be used as a substitute for thermal power plants
The Indonesian government plans to use their resource of nuclear raw materials that can generate electrical power, such as uranium and thorium “We are not looking at short term action, but for the next 10 years we will certainly move in”.
Djarot Sulistio Wisnubroto also indicated on VIVA two areas of Indonesia that have the potential to be built Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN), namely Bangka and Jepara. The reason for choosing the two areas is because the potential earthquake risk is very minimal.
On the contrary, the actual Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arcandra Tahar still supports fossil fuel because he thinks that electricity by using nuclear energy is too expensive, in the range of 9.7 to 13.6 US cents per KWh, and Indonesia should still focus on thermal power plants
Nevertheless, Batan continues to develop experimental reactors for research purposes.
