The head of the Suez Canal Authority and the economic zone of the Canal, Mohab Mamesh, revealed that the Authority is targeting the establishment of wind farms for the production of electricity, as well as other power projects to generate energy from renewable sources such as solar energy, as part of the development plan for the region. Especially under the country’s plan to generate 20% of the total electricity generated from renewable energies by 2020.
Mamesh said that the economic zone of the Suez Canal is an ideal area for the implementation of such projects, according to the new and renewable energy authority. And the region’s ideal is due to the availability of vast space, which includes solar energy, wind, and bioenergy.
Mamesh explained that although renewable energy is a new trend in Egypt, there is a strong trend in the government to increase production and reliance on it, instead of traditional sources of energy, which makes renewable energy an opportunity to attract more investments in this field.
The head of the Suez Canal Authority and the economic zone of the Canal pointed out that it is intended to produce 7,200 MW of energy from wind farms to be established in the region, as the government aims to produce 12% of total electricity generated from wind energy and complete the rest of the plan of 20% from other renewable energy sources.
