Rosatom begins hydrogen production at the Kolskaya NPP

Rosatom decided to establish an experimental complex for the production and conversion of hydrogen at the “Kolskaya” nuclear power plant.

The complex, which is expected to start operating in 2023, will be equipped with electrolysis devices with a capacity of 1 MW, with a plan to increase the production capacity of these devices later to 10 MW.

The reason for choosing the “Kolskaya” NPP as an experimental hydrogen production platform in Russia is that it has surplus electricity generated at a low cost. In addition, it has the necessary infrastructure and expertise to produce hydrogen in small quantities to meet its energy needs.

On the other hand, in the coming years, Rosatom will expand the plant (4 units) and add two new power units with the 600MW VVER reactors. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the first of the two units to enter service in 2034.
