Russian Energy Minister, Alexander Novak, has announced that Russia’s nuclear energy company “Rosatom”, has applied to participate in the tender for the construction of the Kingdom’s first nuclear power plant.
The Russian minister said on Wednesday (February 14th), at the conclusion of the meeting of the Russian-Saudi work group for the cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, which was held in Riyadh, the Russian company has applied to participate in the construction of 2 nuclear reactors in the Kingdom,
As part of the promotion of cooperation in the fields of nuclear energy between the two countries, Moscow and Riyadh signed in mid-December a roadmap for cooperation in the fields of “peaceful uses of nuclear energy”.
The signing of the roadmap came alongside with Riyadh’s announcement of its intention to build 16 nuclear power reactors over a period of 20 to 25 years, at a cost of more than $ 80 billion, in addition to the construction of other small reactors for desalination.
By 2040, the project will supply the Kingdom with 17 gigawatts of nuclear power-generated electricity, plus more than 40 gigawatts of electricity produced by solar energy.
