Saudi-Korean cooperation in small nuclear reactors

The South Korean government has agreed with Saudi Arabia to strengthen cooperation for the development of small-sized nuclear reactors known as “Smart”.

According to the Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology of South Korea, it signed with King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A CARE) of Saudi Arabia a Memorandum of Understanding for comprehensive cooperation in the field of nuclear research and development, on Tuesday, September 17th, on the sidelines of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

Under the MoU, both countries will cooperate in the licensing process for the development of the standard design of the nuclear reactors “Smart” as well as the construction.

The two countries agreed on developing the next generation of “Smart” and the promotion of technical cooperation to build and market “Smart” reactors.

They also agreed on the opening of a joint nuclear research center by the end of this year to support the development of a nuclear power research center in Saudi Arabia.
