Sino-Canadian cooperation in nuclear safety

Mr. Li Ganjie, Vice Minister of China Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) and Director of National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), recently met in Beijing Mr. Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

In the meeting, both sides determined to further consolidate their relationship in maintaining the nuclear safety. Mr. Li Ganjie talked about China’s current nuclear situation, and Mr. Ramzi Jammal came to China with another role this time—the Group Leader of IAEA Assessment and Evaluation Group to China’s nuclear and radiation safety works, therefore, both sides also exchange around the topics of nuclear and radiation safety supervision and assessment.

Mr. Li Ganjie and Mr. Ramzi Jammal signed a MOU with regard to the nuclear safety supervision cooperation and information sharing between NNSA and CNSC.

Note: Earlier another MOU was signed in Ottawa by Michael Binder, President of the  Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and in Beijing by Li Ganjie. The MOU provides a framework to exchange technical information on topics such as the regulation of nuclear facilities and radioactive sources, and radiation protection. The document provides guidance on the arrangement of cooperative activities and responsibilities for the security of information exchanged by the two regulators. It enables two sides to exchange information, experience and best practices, and to enhance training in developing the CANDU pressurized heavy water reactor technology.
