The spokesperson of the ministry of water resources and electricity of Sudan revealed that Sudan is seeking cooperation with Russia to establish nuclear power plants.
Mohamed Abdel Rahim Gawish said:
“A workshop will be held on May the 22nd, with the Russian corporation (Rosatom), and with the participation of the ministries of electricity, mining, health, agriculture, industry, higher education and the National authority of atomic energy”.
(…) “there are documents will be presented from the two sides, the Russian company and the mentioned Sudanese ministries, to consider cooperation in the use of nuclear energy. This workshop is considered as “first steps” for cooperation in several fields, and reflects the ministry of electricity concern in the field of training and capacity-building and building a nuclear power plant for the purpose of electricity”.
Worth mentioning, that Sudan informed the (IAEA) in 2012 of its intention to use nuclear energy to generate electricity, pointing the increase in electricity demand because of the country’s population grew.
Sudan, represented by the ministry of water resources and electricity, signed on the 24th of May 2016, a memorandum of understanding with China national nuclear energy corporation to build nuclear reactors that will contribute in generating electricity for the country.
