Syria to buy electricity from Russia?

Syrian Electricity Minister, Mohammad Zuhair Kharboutli, said in an interview that his country is studying the issue of buying electricity from Russia.

He stated that several memorandums of understanding had been signed with the Russian side, including the rehabilitation and repair of sections 2, 3 and 4 at the Aleppo Thermal Power Plant. And according to Kharboutli, the two sides will also discuss the possibility of buying electricity if projects related to thermal power stations are implemented.

The Syrian minister said: “A few days ago, the Russian side, Technoprom, sent an invitation to confirm the activation of the memoranda and agreements concluded by the Russian and Syrian sides.”

He pointed out that the main obstacle facing the cooperation between the two countries, is a matter of funding; but he said that they will overcome funding difficulties soon.
